To drive safely and comply with regulations, it’s essential to know which accessories are mandatory, and which documents are essential to have in your vehicle. These items not only enable you to react effectively in the event of an incident, but also to justify the conformity and legality of your situation on the road.
F. Accessories and documents
Mandatory accessories
In the event of a breakdown or accident, you must set your accessories to the minimum level. – On freeways: Place the warning triangle 100 metres away from the vehicle. – Elsewhere: Position at 30 meters. – In built-up areas: Can be placed less than 30 meters away or on the vehicle.

The extinguisher
Placed in the passenger compartment of the vehicle, it must be visible and within easy reach of the driver. It has a validation date.

The first-aid kit
Contains adhesive dressings, cloth triangles, disposable gloves, surgical masks, sterile tablets, stretch bandages, round-tipped scissors, single-use gloves. All securely packed for easy access.

The retro-reflective vest
Placed in the passenger compartment of the vehicle. Compulsory for the driver of a disabled vehicle on freeways and motorways. Recommended for use in built-up areas.

Certificate of conformity
Issued by the manufacturer when the vehicle is purchased. Form and color vary according to make. Always follows the vehicle, not the owner. Also indicates the vehicle’s CO₂ emission level.

Certificate of insurance
All motor vehicles in public places must be insured. Must always accompany the vehicle. Trailers over 750 kg MMA must be insured.

Certificate of registration
All motor vehicles and trailers whose MMA exceeds 750 kg must be registered with the Direction des immatriculations des véhicules (DIV). The document must always be in the vehicle with the license plate. Always keep a copy of the document at home.

Technical inspection
Mandatory in Belgium for all vehicles over 4 years old. Mandatory if you wish to sell your vehicle. Valid for one year.
