Harmonious and safe cohabitation between motorized vehicles and more vulnerable users such as cyclists and moped riders is essential on our roads. This module introduces you to the rules and behaviors you need to adopt to ensure the protection of these users, who do not enjoy the same protection as motorists in the event of a collision.
Behavior towards cyclists and mopeds
Caution for cyclists
The driver of a motor vehicle or motorcycle must not endanger a cyclist or two-wheeled moped rider on the public highway. They must exercise extra caution in the presence of children and elderly cyclists.

Lateral distance
Drivers must leave a lateral distance of at least one metre between their vehicle and the cyclist or two-wheeled moped driver. Outside built-up areas, the lateral distance is at least one and a half meters.

Passage for cyclists
Drivers may only approach crossings for cyclists and moped riders at moderate speeds and may not endanger other road users. They must not obstruct cyclists and moped riders as they complete their crossing of the carriageway at normal speed. If necessary, he must stop to let them pass.

Dimensions
Drivers may not use a crossing for cyclists and riders of two-wheeled mopeds if traffic congestion is such that they would be likely to be immobilized on the crossing.

Respecting the rules concerning cyclists and moped riders is not only a legal obligation, but also a moral responsibility towards these vulnerable road users. By maintaining adequate safety distances, adapting your speed and paying extra attention at cycle crossings, you are actively contributing to collective road safety. Never forget that behind every bicycle or moped there is a person whose protection depends largely on your responsible behavior at the wheel.
