General information about driver’s licenses
Since 2010, driving licenses have been issued in credit card format. Its administrative validity is limited to 10 years, requiring renewal without further examination. To obtain your license, please contact your local administration. Fees include a basic fee of €20, plus any local taxes.
Licence categories for two-wheelers
AM license (moped)
To drive a Class B moped, you must :
- Must be at least 16 years old (18 to carry a passenger)
- Take a compulsory 4-hour driving school course
- Passing the practical test (in a free driving school or driving school)
Note: Holders of a category B licence are automatically entitled to drive category AM vehicles.
Unlicensed car
Driving a car without a license is permitted from the age of 16 in Belgium, subject to certain conditions:
- Hold an AM license
- No passenger transport under 18
Motorcycle license (A1, A2, A)
The progression of motorcycle licenses follows a logical pattern:
- A1 (18 years): Motorcycles up to 125cc and 11kW
- A2 (20 years): Motorcycles up to 35kW
- A (age 22 or direct access at age 24): All bikes
Driving license
There are two ways to obtain a B driving licence:
Classic chain
- Accessible from age 18
- Minimum 3-month internship
- Provisional license valid for 18 months after 20 hours of lessons
Accompanied sector
- Accessible from age 17
- Minimum 9-month internship
- Practical exam from age 18
Truck license
C license (truck)
- C1: Vehicles from 3.5T to 7.5T
- C: Vehicles over 3.5T
Licence D (Passenger transport)
- D1: 8 to 16 seats + driver
- D : More than 8 seats + driver
